The finish is too far from my office to get there and back to get any work done today.

Sending out well wishes to Ben Brookes who was injured yesterday in a crash going over one of the Cattle Guards outside of Prineville rez.

Also I heard that Jen Joynt of Metromint took a spill and was injured. Wishing her fast recovery

Learn something folks if you want to win on Pilot Butte. Use your big ring.
Yep it is a new kit for Rock Racing.

Webcor ladies made the break but lost the battle at the Butte.

While still GC contenders in their realm with 2 webbers near the front with only 1K to go and a HUGE gap on the field at the base of the grueling Pilot Butte ..., Kristin Armstrong appears to have crushed the last climb with a broken spoke in her rear wheel.... The Webcor ladies had 3 in the break of 5 that had contained Kristin A and Aarons rider Julie Beveridge . 3 more were right behind them.

You could see at 200 meter mark the gap was growing as the climb got harder.

One of those days on the bike. Wish it would repeat over and over

On Sunday I managed to slip off for a peaceful ride with my friend Sebastian.
On this day we chose to ride Cross bikes up in Phils trails. During our venture I shared some tips and basic drills for cyclocross which was fun to do for the first time without pain in my back (almost 2 years).

We rode at a steady pace, it was still early so there were not many folks out. But the sun was up and it was mid 70s and just plain felt great. My legs still a little wimpy from just little commute rides felt pretty good on the ride. Had I gassed it I am sure I would of imploded in 30 seconds. The shouldered jog up a short climb turned into a walk which was great for stretching out.
We ended up riding down some of the more twisty and technical (rocky) stuff like G.S. that I usually only save for the MTB, but this was one of his first rides on the bike and its good to show folks how great a cross bike rides even on challenging trails.. more importantly it also shows when you need to dismount.

This ride brought back so many memories of those early season super easy rides that we used to prep for the harsh winter cross season, those were the rides I remember the most as they are usually in the heat of summer.
I even broke a cross frame on a ride with Sabine years ago on one of these rides and a handle bar with a large group on one of the longer rides that basically busted my shoulder up for good.. But all good memories.

I could have the weather stay the same for another 6 months now...

Well, Cascade is once again upon us. I saw few fancy colored skinny suits riding around this morning on my way to work. Can't wait to watch things unfold and still catch Le Tour at night.

Biking to work has been good

I have to make note.

its been a good month of commuting to and from work. There have been a few windy days but for the most part things people have been great.

There is always the drivers who cut in front of you to make the turn 20 yards up or the few bad applese. I guess I just get prepared for it now. And really I have never had the experience i have had here in Bend where people randomly stop to let you cross the road if your sitting at an intersection. Even though they don't have to it is still a pretty nice thing to do and probably because many folks here in town can appreciate waiting to cross a busy street at 5pm.

I pass or get passed by about 10 people a day by bike on my commute now. It's pretty cool.
Yesterday I had some folks from out of town who rode their bikes from the Shilo inn to downtown ask me where a good place to get breakfast was. That was pretty cool to see some folks come to town with the intent to not use their cars.

Throat singing fun before the holidays

My buddy told me today that he and his wife are headed to Mongolia for 3 weeks. Its a pretty common journey for them as his wife is Mongolian.
It reminded me of when he introduced me to the Tuvan throat singers Chirgilchin.
I saw some Tuvan throat singers about 10 years ago and absolutely enjoyed it.

A little weird for folks that don't like mellow music from strange lands, but coming from a family of musicians, opera singers, and masters of instrumentation I cannot help but be amazed. Probably because I cannot even do anything like it, but something in the music makes me feel their life and culture bleed from the songs.

This is an interesting movie on the blind blues singer Paul Pena's journey to master the style.

I was just surfing around to check up on one of my wifes last teammates while racing the NRC.
Little Lieselot Decroix who we had join up with the team in 2006 here in the states went back home and has made some great progress in her racing.
Lots of podiums and high finishes this year, she was picked for the Bejing Olympics!

Congrats to Lieselot!

And no she is not dating Tom Boonen.. I think it says "she is the next Tom Boonen?" (they come from the same area in Belgium)

Ouch. Gas prices change views on energy - not what I expected

Gas prices change views on energy

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new poll shows high gasoline prices have dramatically changed Americans' views on energy and the environment. More people now say expanding oil drilling and building new power plants is a bigger priority than energy conservation.

-------------
Ok.. ok.. So it was only 2000 Americans... I think they were somewhere in mid Texas.
Basically throw out the environment and screw our great grandkids, we want to drive our SUV's.
I don't get it. Why folks want to spend so much time on expanding on one of the worst polluters we have... and say to hell with Energy conservation?

rumors of who is coming...

Chris Horner
Levi Lep
Santiago Botero
Tommy D

The ladies races have some good names coming in and 70 riders + signed up.
I think a few are going to get blown out the back of the short list.... Just like in the Men's race.

Will the officials actually time cut?

After watching the Hulabaloo crits at NW crossing on Friday I felt like I needed to go and ride before the baby comes next month.
While the gals were getting set for the baby shower.. I rode over to my friend Sebastian's house across town and we climbed up Mt Bachelor via Century.
It was hot when we started and only seemed to get hotter. I was pouring sweat all over my eyes.. it was killing me.
Tough to face how out of shape you are and how long of a road you have to go down before ever feeling any fitness ever again. Eventually the heat got to me, I couldn't take the sweat in my eyes and the pounding head ache and I had to turn around at Messener snow park.

I think I did a total of only 35 miles on Saturday. Kinda disappointed, but I was spanked and dehydrated from leaving too late. I lost close to 5 pounds in water mass which is a pretty heavy loss of water and kinda glad I called it quits when I did..

I am going to have to try the climb up in the morning before it hits the high 80's low 90's..
